Ailey's February 2019 engagement is presented as part of Destination Dance Ailey Atlanta. The goal of Destination Dance is to engage Atlanta’s vibrant cultural community through partnerships between Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (which has been performing in the city since the 1970s) and Atlanta-based cultural, civic, and educational organizations – including The Fox Theatre. In honor of the Company’s 60th anniversary, Matthew Rushing – a 25-year veteran of the Ailey company — performed the iconic solo “I Wanna Be Ready” from Mr. Ailey’s classic work, Revelations. Filmed in Rogers, Texas, where Mr. Ailey was born and lived as a young child, Mr. Rushing’s performance features live accompaniment by five local singers.

In honor of the 2019 ASALH National Black History Theme "Black Migrations," the Atlanta Branch, in collaboration with the City of Atlanta, Clark Atlanta University Department of Humanities, and the AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library (RWWL), will unveil the "Cascade Community Tour" website. During this event, we will also host a panel of neighborhood oral history participants and CAU graduate students as they share their stories of migration, white flight, and gentrification. The NEH Award-winning Digital Humanities Project was funded by the City of Atlanta Office of City Planning. The "Cascade Oral History Project" is stored at the AUC Woodruff Library, and it is an ongoing program of the Atlanta Branch. His practice focuses on the fragmentation and manipulation of structure and surface, exploring self-image and forward projection.
